United Airlines Launches Direct Flight Route from New York to Tenerife South, Meeting Growing Demand
United Airlines is set to launch a direct flight route between New York (EWR) and Tenerife South (TFS) on Friday, the 9th of June 2023. The route will operate three times a week in each direction until the 27th of September 2023, offering a total capacity of 13,400 seats. Departures from the US will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, while return flights from Tenerife South will be available on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The flight duration will be just under 7 hours.
Passengers travelling on this route will be accommodated on a Boeing 757-200 aircraft, which offers 169 seats. This direct flight connection is being reintroduced for the summer season, following a successful performance in terms of occupancy last year, reaching nearly 90 percent. United Airlines initially launched this direct connection in June 2022, making Tenerife South its fourth destination in Spain.
The initial decision to establish this new route was driven by identified demand. According to statistics from Tenerife South Airport operator AENA, in 2019 over 12,000 passengers flew between Tenerife and New York using indirect flights. Following the introduction of the new direct flight connection, a total of 26,507 holidaymakers from North America arrived in Tenerife last year. This constitutes a 55 percent increase in visitor numbers in 2019.
The figures reflect the growing interest and demand for travel between these two destinations. If the positive occupancy trend continues this year, it is expected that the New York-Tenerife flight will become a regular annual route starting in 2024.
