On Friday, the 30th of June 2023, a partial failure in Enaire’s flight plan computer system resulted in major disruptions and delays at Tenerife South Airport, as well as other prominent airports in Valencia, the Balearic Islands, and Catalonia. Enaire, the Spanish air navigation manager responsible for air traffic control, manages a substantial volume of approximately 2 million flights annually, positioning it as the fourth-largest air navigation service provider in Europe.
Enaire oversees 2.2 million square kilometers of airspace through its five air control centers located in Barcelona, the Canary Islands, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, and Seville. Moreover, the organization operates 21 control towers to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel. However, between 10:30 and 12:45, a significant glitch within the system caused extensive disruptions and delays for numerous passengers.
Enaire promptly responded to the technical setback, emphasizing that flight operations remained uninterrupted throughout the incident. The Enaire team collaborated with technical experts to restore normal operations as swiftly as possible. Thankfully, the system is now functioning flawlessly and gradually recovering from the disruption.
Nevertheless, the aftermath of the computer system failure will inevitably result in a backlog of delayed flights. Travellers should anticipate that the residual effects of this incident may still be noticeable for several more hours. It is advised for passengers to stay informed about flight information, reach out to their respective airlines for specific instructions, and allocate extra time when planning their journeys. However, with the system restored and operations back on track, it is expected that the backlog of delayed flights will gradually diminish, allowing travelers to resume their journeys with minimal disruption.
