When you arrive at Tenerife South Airport, you will find that the airport has good wheelchair access throughout. The island of Tenerife is fairly wheelchair-friendly in general. There are long flat promenades which connect the main resorts. These are easily navigated and pleasant to travel on. You will find many wheelchair-accessible hotels, and the main tourist attractions on the island can be navigated in a wheelchair. There are also a number of accessible beaches (e.g. Playa de las Vistas in Los Cristianos and Playa de las Teresitas near Santa Cruz) .
Some of the big resorts in the south, like Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas are amongst the most accessible on the island. In Puerto de la Cruz, in the northern part of Tenerife, the area around the seafront is flat and suitable for wheelchairs. However, it does get hillier once you go a little further inland, which makes propelling or pushing a wheelchair a lot harder. Los Gigantes, along the west coast, is fairly difficult to navigate in a wheelchair, due to its steep hills and partly inaccessible pavements.
Most airlines will allow you to bring two items of equipment free of charge. However, rules may differ, so it is important to check with your airline before you travel. See also “Flying with reduced mobility“.
If you are taking your power chair or mobility scooter to Tenerife with you, you will need to consider the following:
Your airline will require the following information before you travel:
Check that your wheelchair/mobility aid or scooter is insured before you travel, in case the equipment gets damaged during transit or while you are on holiday. It is advisable to look at the terms of your travel insurance policy, as wheelchairs or mobility scooters are often excluded from cover.
Some household contents insurance policies include your wheelchair in your “personal possessions”. You will need to contact your insurer to enquire whether it will be possible to include your wheelchair or mobility scooter whilst abroad. There are also specialised insurance companies who can provide insurance cover for your wheelchair.
When you plan your holiday, it is worth considering what you will do in the event of your wheelchair/mobility aid breaking down or malfunctioning during your stay in Tenerife. Luckily, there are several places on the island that might be able to provide specialist assistance (see below).
If you don’t wish to take your wheelchair or mobility aid with you, there is the option of hiring one in Tenerife. There are quite a number of companies across the island that specialise in mobility equipment hire. We have listed some of these for you below and there are plenty more to choose from. Most providers will deliver and collect the equipment to and from your holiday accommodation.
