Tenerife South International Airport (TFS) is situated in the south of the island. Also known as Tenerife South–Reina Sofía Airport, it is the larger of Tenerife’s two airports. TFS Airport was built due to problems with the location of the original Tenerife North Airport (TFN). The north of the island experiences frequent adverse weather conditions with fog and low visibility, impacting take-offs and landings at TFN.
Tenerife South Airport is the second busiest airport in the Canary Islands. Since its inauguration in 1978, it has handled over 140 million passengers, 11,000,000 of these in 2019. Due to the pandemic, passenger numbers plummeted steeply in 2020. However, signs of recovery could be seen in 2021, and forecasts for 2022 are promising. Car hire desks can be found in the arrivals area of the main building along with TFS airport transfer pickup points.
