Three of Tenerife’s most popular destinations lie in the south of the island along the west coast and are easily reached from Tenerife South Airport. Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje merge almost seamlessly into one another, with no obvious geographical boundaries, yet each has its own distinct character. Los Cristianos, originally a fishing village, is the most traditional of the three resorts. Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje, by contrast, are purpose-built; the former is well known for its lively nightlife, while the latter is generally regarded as the more upmarket option.
Playa Paraíso is a relaxed coastal resort in southwest Tenerife, known for its quiet atmosphere and scenic ocean views. It offers a mix of hotels, small coves and man-made swimming areas, along with easy access to the livelier resorts of Costa Adeje. It’s a good choice for visitors seeking a more laid-back base while staying close to the island’s main attractions.
Another favourite with visitors is Los Gigantes, located slightly further up the west coast. Its name, meaning “The Giants”, refers to the dramatic cliff formations that dominate the landscape, rising sheer from the sea to heights of up to 600 metres.
On the north coast, you will find the city of Puerto de la Cruz. Once a small fishing village, it has grown into one of Tenerife’s leading holiday resorts and offers plenty to see and do. In addition to its striking dark volcanic-sand beaches, the city boasts a charming Old Town with colonial architecture. Further highlights include a large zoo and the Lago Martiánez leisure complex, designed by César Manrique, featuring a series of saltwater swimming pools.
Also in the north of the island, along the east coast, lies Santa Cruz, the capital of both Tenerife and the Canary Islands and home to the regional Parliament. Santa Cruz is renowned for hosting the world’s second-largest carnival (after Rio de Janeiro), which usually takes place in February or March.
